Why a failed British action show became a cult phenomenon across Continental Europe
In short: Produced in 1971, The Persuaders! was a lavish, expensive gamble that flopped in America. Yet, through creative dubbing and a unique chemistry between Tony Curtis and Roger Moore, it transformed into an enduring international success, proving that sometimes a show's best version is not the one the producers intended.
The Persuaders! was conceived as a high-budget action comedy featuring two contrasting millionaires: Danny Wilde, a self-made American oil tycoon from the Bronx, and Lord Brett Sinclair, a polished British aristocrat. Forced together by a retired judge to solve cases that official channels could not, the pair navigated a world of luxury cars and global travel. The series was filmed between May 1970 and June 1971 across Britain, France, and Italy, with each of the 24 episodes costing approximately £100,000 to produce.
Despite its ambition, the show struggled in the United States, where it aired on ABC against Mission: Impossible. Its failure in the American market, coupled with Roger Moore’s subsequent casting as James Bond, ensured the series remained a single-season production. However, the show found unexpected life abroad. In Germany, the series was rebranded as Die Zwei. Under the direction of Rainer Brandt, the German dubbing team radically altered the dialogue, injecting street slang, ironic humor, and fourth-wall-breaking commentary that transformed the show into a cult hit. This German version was so successful that it served as the basis for the French adaptation, Amicalement Vôtre.
The linguistic transformation was so profound that researchers from the University of Hamburg noted the German version shared little with the original beyond the visual footage. The dubbing introduced a more explicit, pro-American tone and shifted character dynamics to suit local sensibilities. While some critics dismissed the original as 'absolute hokum,' the series’ international legacy remains strong. The iconic Aston Martin DBS driven by Moore, which features signatures from both leads, continues to appear at exclusive motoring events, symbolizing the enduring, if accidental, global appeal of this transatlantic experiment.
