In short: When Stephen King’s horror meets HBO’s procedural grit, the result is a polarizing masterpiece of atmosphere. While critics lauded its haunting performances and 'elegantly bleak' tone, many felt the series lost its narrative grip as it transitioned from grounded crime into inexplicable phenomena.

Adapted by Richard Price from Stephen King's 2018 novel, The Outsider premiered on HBO in January 2020. To heighten the emotional stakes for lead detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), Price made a significant departure from the source material: in the series, Anderson is grieving his son’s death from cancer, whereas the son remains alive in the book. This shift was intended to give the protagonist a deeper personal connection to the loss of children.

The production faced unique structural challenges. Jason Bateman directed the initial pair of installments to depict the book's opening section, whereas the subsequent eight focus on its latter part. This pacing choice led to a divided critical reception; early reviews praised the 'roiling boil' of the atmosphere and Bateman's direction, but later critiques suggested the series slowed to a 'tight simmer,' struggling to maintain its momentum as it introduced doppelgängers and malevolent spirits.

A notable point of creative friction involved the character Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo). Originally from King’s Bill Hodges trilogy, Price reworked her for this adaptation without maintaining continuity with previous TV versions. Despite Price's efforts to modify her, King insisted on retaining her name. While critics like Jen Chaney felt the narrative began to 'slip through his fingers' by adding too many subplots, others praised the series as a credible mystery that successfully navigated the difficult line between standard crime drama and supernatural horror.
