A postcard dream turns into a tragic reality in this award-winning refugee drama
In short: In 1990, director Xavier Koller released a harrowing portrait of the refugee experience. Following an Alevi family from rural Turkey as they attempt to reach Switzerland, the film exposes the brutal gap between the promise of a prosperous life and the lethal reality of illegal migration across the Alps.
The film, titled Reise der Hoffnung in German and Umuda yolculuk in Turkish, centers on the Öztürk family. Driven by economic hardship and political instability in their remote Eastern Turkish village, the father, Haydar, decides to lead his wife, Meryem, and their children toward the perceived sanctuary of Switzerland. Their only knowledge of the destination comes from a single postcard, a symbol of the idealized life they hope to attain.
To achieve a high degree of realism, Koller filmed on location across Turkey, Greece, Italy, and Switzerland. The production team relied on extensive research and real-life refugee accounts to depict the perilous journey, which includes crossing treacherous mountain terrain and navigating the dangers posed by ruthless smugglers. The cast, featuring Necmettin Çobanoglu as Haydar and Nur Sürer as Meryem, portrays the emotional toll of this migration, culminating in a tragic sequence where the family is abandoned in a blizzard. During this crossing, their young son, Mehmet, dies of hypothermia.
The film was a significant critical success, earning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 63rd ceremony. Critics praised Koller for his sensitive, detailed approach to the subject, noting his ability to humanize the broader refugee experience. By collaborating with local communities and using local extras, the production maintained an authentic atmosphere that resonated with global audiences. Today, the film remains a poignant exploration of the desperation that forces families to risk everything for a future that often remains out of reach.
