In short: Released in 1994, this fantasy adventure follows a statistics-obsessed boy who finds himself trapped inside a library where literary classics come to life. While it featured a star-studded cast and pioneering technical ambition, the film became a cautionary tale of production mismanagement and a landmark legal battle over screenwriting credits.

The Pagemaster was a high-concept project produced by Turner Feature Animation and released by 20th Century Fox. Starring Macaulay Culkin as the timid Richard Tyler, the film depicts a journey through the world of fiction, where the protagonist must confront his fears alongside anthropomorphic books named Adventure, Fantasy, and Horror. It holds the distinction of being one of the first films to integrate live-action, traditional hand-painted cel animation, and computer-generated imagery, including a complex dragon sequence.

Despite its technical milestones, the production was plagued by internal friction. Director Joe Johnston later disavowed the film, citing unauthorized re-editing and mismanagement that pushed the project over budget. The film grossed only $13.7 million against a $34 million budget. Critics were largely unimpressed, with Roger Ebert describing it as a dreary experience, though some reviewers praised its imaginative premise. The film also marked the end of an era for 20th Century Fox, serving as their final animated feature to utilize traditional cel animation before shifting to digital methods.

The project is perhaps most significant for a landmark Writers Guild of America (WGA) arbitration case. Producer David Kirschner attempted to claim sole authorship, despite the screenplay being written by David Casci under a WGA contract. The dispute tested the WGA's jurisdiction over hybrid animated films. After an extensive investigation, the WGA ruled in favor of Casci, forcing a settlement that credited both men and Ernie Contreras. This case remains one of the most expensive and thorough credit investigations in the guild's history, highlighting the complex power dynamics behind 1990s studio animation.
