How a seven-and-a-half cent dispute sparked a Broadway musical masterpiece
In short: In 1954, a high-stakes labor dispute at a pajama factory became the foundation for a Tony Award-winning musical. Beyond the catchy songs lies a story of romance, union strikes, and the debut of legendary choreography that would change the face of musical theatre forever.
Based on Richard Bissell’s 1953 novel 7½ Cents, The Pajama Game tells the story of the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The plot centers on a labor dispute where workers, led by Union Grievance Committee leader Katherine "Babe" Williams, demand a wage increase of seven-and-a-half cents an hour. This struggle is complicated by a budding romance between Babe and the new factory superintendent, Sid Sorokin, who finds himself caught between his professional duties and his feelings for a union activist.
The production is historically significant for being the Broadway debut of choreographer Bob Fosse. His work on the original 1954 production helped secure the show a Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical also served as a career launchpad for Shirley MacLaine, who was an understudy for Carol Haney when she was injured; her performance caught the eye of a Paramount Pictures producer, leading to a contract with the studio.
The musical's complexity is reflected in its musical structure. Although uncredited, Frank Loesser composed certain tracks such as "A New Town Is a Blue Town" and "There Once Was a Man", despite the main score being by Jerry Ross and Richard Adler. Various revivals have occurred, notably a 1973 version and a 2006 Roundabout Theatre Company Broadway production that secured a Tony Award for Best Musical Revival.
The plot examines industrial work tensions using dramatic techniques, like the union sabotaging production by sewing buttons incorrectly or providing mismatched pajama sizes. These elements, combined with the high-energy dance numbers like "Steam Heat," transformed a story about industrial relations into a staple of community and school theatre productions.
