How a rocky Broadway tryout became one of the most iconic musicals in history
In short: Before it became a record-breaking Broadway sensation, Hello, Dolly! was a troubled production facing disastrous tryouts and internal feuds. Yet, through major script revisions and the star power of Carol Channing, this 1964 musical transformed into an enduring classic that defined the latter half of the decade.
The musical is rooted in a long lineage of farcical theater, tracing back to John Oxenford’s 1835 play A Day Well Spent. Johann Nestroy adapted it in 1842, and Thornton Wilder later transformed it into his 1938 play The Merchant of Yonkers. After that production flopped, Wilder revised it into The Matchmaker in 1954, which eventually provided the narrative foundation for the musical adaptation by Michael Stewart, with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman.
The production’s path to Broadway was fraught with tension. During tryouts in Detroit and Washington, D.C., the show struggled, prompting producer David Merrick and director Gower Champion to overhaul the script and score. This process included a contentious collaboration on the song "Before the Parade Passes By," which led to an eight-year feud between the creative team and songwriters Charles Strouse and Lee Adams. Despite these behind-the-scenes conflicts, the show opened on January 16, 1964, and became a massive success.
Upon its debut, the musical swept the 1964 Tony Awards, winning ten categories—a record it held for 37 years until The Producers surpassed it in 2001. The show’s longevity was cemented by 2,844 performances and a rotating cast of legendary stars, including Carol Channing, Ginger Rogers, and eventually Ethel Merman. Its cultural impact was further solidified by a 1969 film adaptation and the induction of its original cast recording into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002.
