Why did a star-studded animated musical become a box office failure and a cult classic?
In short: Released in 1995, The Pebble and the Penguin was a high-profile musical featuring Martin Short and Barry Manilow. Despite its pedigree, studio interference led its directors to disown the project. It flopped spectacularly in theaters, only to find a second life as a beloved cult favorite on home video.
Directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, The Pebble and the Penguin was intended to capitalize on the success of the 1990s musical revival. The film follows Hubie, a stuttering Adélie penguin who must navigate a dangerous journey to win his mate with a pebble. Production began in November 1991, but the project faced significant turmoil when Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures demanded extensive changes, including re-recorded voices and cut scenes. Disillusioned, Bluth and Goldman left before completion and requested their names be removed from the credits.
The film was released on April 12, 1995, grossing only $3.9 million against a $28 million budget. Critics were largely harsh, panning the story as one-note and the animation as unfinished. Roger Ebert notably criticized the film's color-coding, which depicted the hero as white and the villain as brown, arguing it reinforced negative societal biases. Others found the songs by Barry Manilow forgettable, though some reviewers praised the background animation and the vocal performances of the cast, which included Jim Belushi and Tim Curry.
Despite its theatrical failure, the film eventually gained a dedicated following. Its legacy is tied to the transition of animation technology; it was the final film produced by Don Bluth Ireland Limited to use traditional hand-painted cels before the studio went bankrupt. Years later, Bluth and Goldman returned to supervise a 2007 'Family Fun Edition' DVD, which restored scenes and corrected errors. While it remains a polarizing entry in the Bluth filmography, it stands as a unique artifact of 1990s animation, bridging the gap between traditional techniques and the digital future.
