Why Don Bluth’s 1994 Animated Feature Is Often Cited as His Worst Work
In short: Released to a dismal box-office performance and scathing critical reception, A Troll in Central Park remains a cautionary tale in animation history. Despite the pedigree of directors Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, the film struggled with production delays, lack of promotion, and a narrative that failed to resonate with audiences.
Conceived following the near completion of Rock-a-Doodle, A Troll in Central Park began production in 1990. Although the film was finished by 1992, it did not reach North American theaters until October 7, 1994. The delay was compounded by co-financers Merlin Films and Media Assets, who opted to prioritize the release of Thumbelina, pushing the troll-centric story to a later date.
The film tells the story of Stanley, a benevolent troll exiled from his kingdom for his ability to grow sentient flowers. Banished to New York City by the villainous Queen Gnorga, Stanley finds himself in Central Park, where he encounters two neglected children, Gus and Rosie. The plot culminates in a magical confrontation that sees the park transformed, yet the execution left critics unimpressed.
Upon release, the film was a commercial failure, grossing only $71,368 in North America. Gary Goldman attributed this to a lack of confidence from distributor Warner Bros. Pictures, which resulted in a limited release and zero promotional support. Critics panned the film for its corniness and pacing, and it currently holds a 14% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The A.V. Club has described it as widely considered to be Bluth’s worst film.
Don Bluth himself has distanced the project from his broader body of work. In a 2001 issue of his magazine ToonTalk, he reflected on the production process, noting that the development of a story requires time and care. He admitted that the experience of making this film taught his team a difficult lesson about the necessity of proper narrative development.
