In short: The Rhythm Section was meant to be a major franchise, but it became a historic failure. Despite a $50 million budget and high-profile producers, the film suffered the worst wide-opening weekend in history, leaving Paramount with millions in losses and a record-breaking drop in theater count just weeks later.

The Rhythm Section, a 2020 action thriller directed by Reed Morano, tells the story of Stephanie Patrick, a woman who descends into addiction after her family dies in a terrorist-linked plane crash. Seeking vengeance, she undergoes training to become an assassin. The project was long in development, with rights acquired by New Line Cinema in 2005 before eventually moving to Paramount Pictures. Production was plagued by delays, including a six-month halt after star Blake Lively broke her knuckle on set, and creative friction between the studio and producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who favored a slow, character-focused tone over the Bond-style action Paramount expected.

When the film finally arrived in theaters on January 31, 2020, the results were catastrophic. It debuted to just $2.8 million, the lowest opening weekend ever for a film in over 3,000 theaters. By its third weekend, it was pulled from 2,955 screens—the largest such drop in cinema history. Ultimately, the film grossed only $6 million against its $50 million budget, with Paramount projected to lose between $30 million and $40 million. Test screenings in 2018 had already signaled trouble, returning some of the worst results in the studio's history.

Despite the commercial failure, some critics found merit in the film's subversion of genre tropes. Unlike the polished assassins seen in films like Atomic Blonde or Red Sparrow, Stephanie Patrick is portrayed with a gritty, realistic near-incompetence. Reviewers noted that her fighting skills are unrefined and her missions are often botched, offering a grounded, if flawed, departure from standard action fare. While the film holds a 29% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, some observers argued that its rejection by audiences was ironic, given the frequent industry demand for fresher, less conventional takes on the spy thriller.
