Why the 1997 action thriller The Saint underwent a radical, last-minute narrative transformation
In short: The 1997 film adaptation of The Saint was a financial success, yet its path to the screen was fraught with rejected leads and a drastically altered ending. Originally, the film featured a tragic death for its lead scientist, but producers ultimately pivoted to a lighter, more conventional resolution before release.
The 1997 action thriller, directed by Phillip Noyce and starring Val Kilmer, was the result of a long, turbulent development process at Paramount Pictures. Before Kilmer was cast, the role was offered to Ralph Fiennes, who declined, alongside a long list of high-profile actors including Mel Gibson, George Clooney, and Daniel Day-Lewis. Kilmer eventually took the part after passing on the role of Batman in Batman & Robin, leading to a script rewrite by Wesley Strick that shifted the setting and consolidated the film's villains.
The most significant change occurred during post-production. In the original script and the film's initial cut, the scientist Emma Russell, played by Elisabeth Shue, was killed by the antagonist Ilya Tretiak. This tragedy served as the catalyst for the film's final act, which saw Simon Templar seeking vengeance in Moscow. However, producers ultimately decided to cut this sequence, instead filming a new, happier epilogue at Oxford and inserting footage of the villains being arrested. This original, darker ending still appears in the film's promotional trailer.
Despite mixed critical reception—holding a 31% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes—the film performed respectably at the box office, grossing $169.4 million worldwide. Critics were divided; some praised Kilmer's performance as a master of disguise, while others, such as Gene Siskel, felt the reliance on disguises undermined the film's tension. The character of Simon Templar, originally created by Leslie Charteris in 1928, has seen numerous iterations across radio, television, and film, yet the 1997 version remains a distinct, if controversial, entry in the franchise's long history.
