A lost masterpiece of Polish cinema was saved by a Grateful Dead guitarist.
In short: Wojciech Has’s 1965 epic, The Saragossa Manuscript, is a labyrinthine puzzle of nested stories. Once nearly erased from history, this surreal journey through haunted Spanish mountains was rescued from obscurity by Jerry Garcia and Martin Scorsese, who funded the restoration of a film that defies traditional narrative logic.
Directed by Wojciech Has and based on the 1815 novel by Jan Potocki, The Saragossa Manuscript is a complex frame story set during the Napoleonic Wars. The plot follows Alfonso van Worden, a captain who encounters supernatural forces, Moorish princesses, and cabalists while traversing the Sierra Morena Mountains. The film’s structure is famously convoluted, featuring tales-within-tales that intertwine and circle back to a recurring image of the protagonist waking beneath a gallows. This 'Chinese-box' narrative, as critic Michał Oleszczyk describes it, requires multiple viewings to fully grasp the connections between characters and events.
The film’s history is as strange as its plot. Originally released in Poland at 182 minutes, it suffered from fragmented distribution abroad, with versions cut down to 147 or 125 minutes. By the 1990s, the only known subtitled print was incomplete. Jerry Garcia, a fan since seeing it in 1966, famously donated $6,000 to help locate a complete version. After Garcia’s death, Martin Scorsese contributed $36,000 to restore Has’s personal print, ensuring the film’s survival. This restored version was later featured in the 'Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema' series.
Budgeted at eighteen million zlotys—three times the cost of a standard feature at the time—the film remains a towering, surreal achievement. It balances rational skepticism with the supernatural, creating a cinematic experience that celebrates the act of storytelling itself. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the greatest Polish films ever made, holding a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and serving as a testament to the power of archival preservation.
