In short: When the sequel to the 2016 hit arrived in 2019, critics noted a distinct lack of narrative cohesion. Instead of a single arc, the film weaves together three separate adventures for its animal leads, resulting in a fractured, energetic romp that prioritizes individual character moments over a unified plot.

The Secret Life of Pets 2, directed by Chris Renaud and produced by Illumination, follows the lives of urban animals after their owners leave for the day. The sequel introduces a significant cast change: Patton Oswalt replaced Louis C.K. as the lead character, Max, in April 2018. This decision followed C.K.'s admission of sexual misconduct in November 2017. The film’s structure is notably episodic, leading some critics, such as James Berardinelli, to describe it as three distinct short stories loosely tethered by returning characters rather than a single cohesive feature.

The narrative splits into three primary threads: Max’s journey to a farm where he learns bravery from a Welsh Sheepdog named Rooster, Gidget’s infiltration of a cat-filled apartment to retrieve a toy, and Snowball’s superhero-inspired mission to rescue a white tiger from an abusive circus owner. These disparate storylines eventually converge for a climactic train rescue, but the fragmented nature of the script remained a point of contention among reviewers. While the film holds a 60% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it received an A- grade from audiences polled by CinemaScore.

Despite mixed critical reception, the film was a financial success. Produced on an $80 million budget, it grossed $446.2 million worldwide and generated a net profit of $118 million. Its release strategy was also notable; it played in 4,561 theaters, marking the second-widest release in history at the time. Beyond the box office, the project pushed technical boundaries as Universal's first release to utilize the HDR10+ format on 4K Ultra HD. Development on a third installment is currently underway, as confirmed by producer Chris Meledandri.
