The show that beat the ratings champion by stealing its audience
In short: In 1990, a fledgling network moved The Simpsons to a high-stakes time slot against the era's biggest television juggernaut. While the ratings numbers suggested a defeat, the actual viewership told a different story of a cultural shift in progress. It was a masterclass in capturing the public's attention.
The second season of The Simpsons (1990–1991) marked a pivotal transition for Fox. To capitalize on the show's success, the network moved it from its Sunday night slot to a leadoff Thursday night position at 8:00 PM. By shifting slots, the cartoon faced off against The Cosby Show, a series that had held the television top spot for five consecutive years. Producers, including James L. Brooks, were initially against the move, fearing that the show—which had been a top 10 performer on Sundays—would see its ratings destroyed by the established giant. The results were nuanced. In the premiere against The Cosby Show, "Bart Gets an 'F'" averaged an 18.4 Nielsen rating, finishing tied for eighth behind The Cosby Show's 18.5. The following week, "Simpson and Delilah" again won the viewer count with 29.9 million people, even as The Cosby Show maintained its higher rating. Despite these massive viewership wins, the show eventually fell out of the top 10 as The Cosby Show continued to lead in Nielsen ratings throughout the season. This era also saw significant creative expansion, including the introduction of recurring characters like Mayor Quimby, Groundskeeper Willie, and Comic Book Guy, and the debut of three different opening sequences to give editors more flexibility. It was a period of rapid growth where the show proved it could command a massive audience, even if it hadn't yet mastered the specific metrics of the era's television hierarchy.
