How a group of Disney defectors created a cult classic on a shoestring budget
In short: In 1979, Don Bluth and his team left Disney to revive the golden age of animation. Working from a garage, they produced The Secret of NIMH. Despite a tight budget and limited theatrical backing, their labor-intensive techniques and mature storytelling turned a box office underdog into a beloved masterpiece.
The Secret of NIMH emerged from a desire to reclaim traditional animation methods that Don Bluth felt were being abandoned for cost-cutting. After leaving Disney in 1979, Bluth and his team founded their own studio, eventually securing a $5.7 million budget from Aurora Productions. This was significantly tighter than typical Disney features, forcing the crew to work 110-hour weeks. To achieve high-quality visuals, they employed labor-intensive techniques like rotoscoping, backlit animation, and physical models for sets, which were then photographed and xeroxed onto cels.
The narrative departed from Robert C. O'Brien's novel, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, by introducing mystical elements like a magical amulet to represent the protagonist's internal courage. Bluth also gave the antagonist, Jenner, more prominence to heighten the drama. During production, a trademark conflict with Wham-O over the name 'Frisbee' forced the team to change the lead character's name to Mrs. Brisby, requiring complex sound editing to alter recorded dialogue. Despite these hurdles, the film was a technical triumph, utilizing 46 different color palettes for the protagonist alone to match various lighting conditions.
Upon its 1982 release, the film faced stiff competition from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and received a limited theatrical run from MGM/UA. While it grossed only $14.7 million in North America, it found success through home video and international markets. Critics like Roger Ebert praised its artistic ambition, though some noted its complex plot might challenge younger viewers. Today, the film is remembered as a bold experiment in independent animation that proved a small, dedicated team could produce a work of enduring quality, eventually earning a Saturn Award and a lasting cult following.
