The Spanish drama that turned dance school ambition into a global cultural phenomenon
In short: Before streaming platforms dominated, a Spanish series captured the high-stakes world of performing arts students in Madrid. Following the lives of aspiring stars at the prestigious Carmen Arranz school, the show became an international sensation, proving that the pursuit of fame is rarely a simple or straightforward journey.
Airing originally on Antena 3 between 2002 and 2005, Un paso adelante became a cultural touchstone. While it drew comparisons to the American series Fame, it carved out its own identity by focusing on the intense personal and professional lives of students like Lola, Pedro, Rober, Jero, Ingrid, Silvia, and Marta. These characters navigated the pressures of elite training, financial struggles, and complex romantic entanglements while striving to become professional actors, singers, and dancers.
The show's reach extended far beyond Spain. It found massive success across Latin America and was adapted or retitled for audiences in Germany, Italy, France, and Romania. In France, it was known as Un, Dos, Tres, while in Germany it was titled Dance – Der Traum vom Ruhm. This global footprint highlighted the universal appeal of the students' struggles, from Pedro’s attempt to overcome shyness through dance to Rober’s performative toughness masking deep-seated insecurities.
The narrative depth was driven by character arcs that spanned years of development. Silvia, the director’s niece, evolved from a reserved, snobbish student into a central friend, while Marta faced a life-altering heart disease diagnosis in the final season. These stories were grounded in the reality of the school environment, where teachers and students alike faced the consequences of their choices. The legacy of the original series remains significant, culminating in the 2022 sequel, UPA Next, which brought back key cast members to revisit the world of the Carmen Arranz school.
