How a 1994 box-office bomb became an enduring animated franchise against all odds
In short: When The Swan Princess hit theaters in 1994, it was crushed by competition from The Lion King, earning only $9.8 million against a $21 million budget. Yet, this supposed failure defied the odds, spawning a massive franchise that continues to release new installments three decades after its initial theatrical debut.
Directed by former Disney animator Richard Rich, The Swan Princess was an ambitious independent project. After being fired from Disney, Rich formed his own studio, Rich Animation Studios, and spent four years crafting the film using traditional hand-painted cels. The production was a massive undertaking, involving 275 animators and artists, with much of the labor performed in Seoul, South Korea. Despite the team's efforts to capture the magic of the early-1990s animation renaissance, the film struggled to find its footing upon release.
The film's commercial performance was hampered by what Variety described as 'sabotage'—the re-release of The Lion King by Disney simultaneously with the debut of The Swan Princess. Critics were divided; while some praised its bright, cheerful nature and fluid pacing, others found the narrative flat and the songs uninspired. The film's theme song, 'Far Longer than Forever,' received a Golden Globe nomination, yet even that was met with mixed reactions, with some reviewers comparing it unfavorably to the musical style of Beauty and the Beast.
Despite its initial status as a box-office bomb, the film found a second life through home video. Turner Home Entertainment sold over 2.5 million units on VHS and LaserDisc following its 1995 release. This popularity transformed the project into a long-running series, leading to nine direct-to-DVD sequels starting in 1997. By its 30th anniversary in 2024, the franchise had expanded significantly, proving that critical and theatrical success are not the only metrics for an enduring legacy in animation.
