A brave mouse, a cursed kingdom, and a box-office disappointment
In short: In the medieval kingdom of Dor, a single rat's mistake triggers a royal tragedy. What follows is a tale of courage, forbidden soup, and a mouse who defies his very nature. Despite its striking visuals, this 2008 animated adventure struggled to find its footing at the global box office.
Based loosely on Kate DiCamillo's 2003 novel, the film follows Despereaux Tilling, a mouse born with unusually large ears and a curiosity that unnerves his family. Unlike his peers, Despereaux is fascinated by stories rather than the instinct to chew books. His defiance of mouse law—specifically the rule against interacting with humans—leads to his banishment by the mouse council.
The plot is set in motion when a rat named Roscuro accidentally plunges into Queen Rosemary's soup, causing a fatal heart attack. This tragedy leads King Philip to ban all soup and declare rats illegal, plunging the kingdom of Dor into poverty and despair. As the kingdom fades, Despereaux must navigate a dangerous world of dungeons, rats, and a sadistic leader named Botticelli Remorso to help Princess Pea.
While the film's visual artistry was noted by critics like Roger Ebert, the production was marked by creative friction. Director Sylvain Chomet was eventually fired following disagreements with producers, leading to Sam Fell and Rob Stevenhagen taking the helm. Ultimately, the film was a commercial disappointment; despite a $60 million budget, it grossed approximately $90 million worldwide, failing to meet expectations.
Critical reception remained mixed. While some praised the animation, others found the narrative predictable or heavy-handed. On Rotten Tomatoes, 57% of critics offered positive reviews, while Metacritic assigned a score of 53 out of 100, characterizing the film's reception as mixed or average.
