Can a poet’s absurd devotion survive the brutal reality of the 2003 Iraq invasion?
In short: In Roberto Benigni’s 2005 film The Tiger and the Snow, a whimsical poetry professor travels to war-torn Baghdad to save the woman he loves. Blending fairy-tale logic with the harsh backdrop of conflict, the film explores whether grand, romantic gestures can truly bridge the gap between obsession and reality.
Directed by and starring Roberto Benigni, The Tiger and the Snow follows Attilio de Giovanni, an eccentric professor who remains hopelessly infatuated with his ex-wife, Vittoria. When Vittoria, a writer, travels to Baghdad to chronicle the life of the poet Fuad, she is severely wounded during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Driven by a desperate, almost surreal devotion, Attilio impersonates a Red Cross surgeon to reach her, navigating a war zone with little more than improvised medical supplies and his own frantic, comedic energy.
The film attempts to balance the gravity of war with a romantic, fable-like narrative, drawing inspiration from Sleeping Beauty. While Attilio succeeds in his mission to revive Vittoria, the film’s tone is complicated by the tragic fate of his friend Fuad, who commits suicide amidst the chaos—a development Attilio misses entirely due to his singular focus on Vittoria. The production itself utilized Tunisia as a stand-in for Iraq, employing local military hardware to simulate the conflict, a choice that underscores the film's reliance on artifice to tell its story.
Critics have been largely divided, or even dismissive, of Benigni’s approach. With a 20% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 22 on Metacritic, many reviewers felt the film struggled to reconcile its disparate elements of romance, comedy, and wartime drama. Some critics noted it functions as a thematic mirror to Benigni’s 1998 success, Life Is Beautiful, yet failed to achieve the same resonance. Despite the critical reception, the film found significant commercial success in Italy, where it debuted at number one and grossed $15.8 million within its first month.
