In short: Theodoros Angelopoulos crafted his 1975 epic, The Travelling Players, while dodging censors during the final years of the Greek military junta. By disguising his politically charged project as a simple retelling of an ancient myth, he created a surreal, multi-layered examination of 20th-century Greek history and the struggle for democracy.

Released in 1975, The Travelling Players is widely considered the supreme achievement of the New Greek Cinema. The film follows a troupe of actors touring the country, performing a 1893 verse drama titled Golfo the Shepherdess. Through their eyes, the narrative spans the turbulent years between 1939 and 1952, capturing the end of the Metaxas dictatorship, the Nazi occupation, and the subsequent civil war.

The film operates on three distinct levels: the troupe's daily life, the broader historical events of mid-20th-century Greece, and a personal drama rooted in the ancient myth of the House of Atreus. Characters mirror mythological figures, with their internal betrayals and political allegiances reflecting the deep divisions of the era. Angelopoulos, a former socialist film critic, used this structure to analyze why establishing a stable democracy in Greece had proven so difficult.

Production was a dangerous endeavor. Angelopoulos worked throughout 1974 while the Regime of the Colonels was still in power, hiding his true intentions from authorities by claiming he was merely adapting the Orestes myth. His persistence paid off with a film that garnered immense international acclaim, including the FIPRESCI award at the 1975 Cannes festival and recognition from directors like Akira Kurosawa. Despite its status as one of the most important films of the late 20th century, it remains a challenging work, noted for its long, static takes and complex, time-shifting narrative structure.
