The suburban nightmare of 657 Boulevard that inspired a hit Netflix mystery series
In short: When a couple moved into their dream home in Westfield, New Jersey, they expected tranquility. Instead, they received chilling letters from a stalker known as The Watcher. This 2022 Netflix series dramatizes their ordeal, weaving real-life terror with fictionalized horror elements that have captivated audiences and sparked intense public curiosity.
The series, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, draws its premise from a 2018 article in The Cut by Reeves Wiedeman. The original story followed Derek and Maria Broaddus, who purchased the residence at 657 Boulevard in 2014. Shortly after moving in, they began receiving threatening correspondence from an anonymous figure claiming to watch the property. The harassment persisted for years, eventually forcing the couple to sell the house in 2019.
While the show stays grounded in the Broaddus family's unsettling experience, it expands into broader horror tropes. One notable addition is the character John Graff, inspired by the real-life mass murderer John List. List, a long-term fugitive, killed his family in his own Westfield home in 1971. The show mirrors specific details of the List case, including his profession as an accountant, his church attendance, and his calculated attempt to delay the discovery of his victims by leaving music playing in the house.
The production process itself became a point of interest. Although the show is set in Westfield, no filming occurred at the actual 657 Boulevard address. Instead, the production utilized a private residence in Rye, New York, built in 2016. Following the show's October 2022 premiere, the real-life home in New Jersey saw a surge in unwanted attention, requiring police presence and barricades to deter trespassers. Despite mixed critical reception—with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 56% approval rating and critics noting its sprawling, sometimes ludicrous narrative—the series proved popular enough to be renewed for a second season.
