How a Spaghetti Western comedy became a global phenomenon through beans and bullets
In short: Released in 1970, They Call Me Trinity redefined the Italian Western by blending slapstick humor with classic gunplay. Starring Terence Hill and Bud Spencer, the film became a massive international success, eventually influencing everything from German dubbing techniques to the soundtrack choices of modern directors like Quentin Tarantino.
Written and directed by Enzo Barboni under the pseudonym E.B. Clucher, the film was initially conceived with only the Trinity character in mind. Producer Italo Zingarelli suggested adding a brother, leading to the iconic pairing of Terence Hill and Bud Spencer. The duo, already popular for their work in the 1967 film God Forgives... I Don't!, brought a unique comedic chemistry to the screen. Hill and Spencer performed their own stunts, while the supporting cast consisted largely of professional stuntmen.
The plot follows the lazy, lightning-fast gunfighter Trinity and his burly brother Bambino, an escaped convict posing as a sheriff. The two form an uneasy alliance to defend a group of pacifist Mormon settlers from a land-grabbing Major named Harriman. The film’s humor and action sequences—including a famous scene where Trinity eats beans after a 24-hour fast—helped it achieve immense popularity. By 2004, it ranked as the 22nd most successful Italian film, trailing just behind The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Beyond its box office performance, the film left a lasting cultural footprint. In Germany, the film’s success established a tradition of rewriting dialogue to enhance humor, even adding lines to scenes where characters were not facing the camera. The film’s title song, 'Trinity: Titoli,' was later featured in Quentin Tarantino's 2012 film Django Unchained. While critics like Roger Ebert offered mixed reviews, others, including author Howard Hughes, have hailed it as the definitive vehicle for the Hill and Spencer partnership, spawning numerous imitations and sequels.
