The rise and fall of Bluepoint Games, the masters of the remaster
In short: From a small Austin startup to a cornerstone of PlayStation Studios, Bluepoint Games redefined how we revisit gaming classics. Known for breathing new life into legendary titles, the studio's journey from its 2006 founding to its sudden shutdown in 2026 offers a striking look at the volatility of the industry.
Founded in 2006 by former Retro Studios employees Andy O'Neil and Marco Thrush, Bluepoint Games built a reputation on technical excellence. Their early work included the 2006 release of Blast Factor, followed by a series of high-profile remasters for the PlayStation 3. These included the God of War Collection in 2009, and the Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection in September 2011. Their ability to modernize older titles became their signature, leading to acclaimed remasters of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 in late 2011.
The studio's portfolio expanded through diverse collaborations, such as porting Flower to the PlayStation 4 and Vita in 2013, and working on the Xbox 360 version of Titanfall in 2014. A major milestone arrived in 2018 with the remake of Shadow of the Colossus for the PlayStation 4. This was followed by the critically acclaimed remake of Demon's Souls in November 2020, which served as a launch title for the PlayStation 5. This success cemented their status as a premier developer, leading to Sony Interactive Entertainment acquiring the studio on September 30, 2021.
However, the studio's trajectory shifted as it transitioned into a first-party developer for PlayStation Studios. While they were working on original content with roughly 70 employees at the time of the acquisition, the landscape changed. In January 2025, Sony confirmed the cancellation of a live service God of War game under development at the studio. Following an internal business review, Sony revealed on 19 February 2026 that Bluepoint Games would close in March 2026, abruptly ending fifteen years of niche development.
