In short: In 1990, the iconic duo Tom and Jerry were reimagined as toddlers for a new Fox Kids series. While the show recycled classic gags and maintained the characters' signature silence, it introduced a softer tone, featuring younger versions of the pair and expanded segments starring other familiar cartoon faces.

Premiering on September 8, 1990, Tom & Jerry Kids marked the second time Hanna-Barbera produced a series based on the legendary cat-and-mouse franchise, following their 1975 effort. The project was a collaboration between Hanna-Barbera and Turner Entertainment Co., the latter having acquired the rights from MGM in 1986. By the time the show reached its third season, Turner Broadcasting System had purchased the Hanna-Barbera studios entirely.

The series departed from the original theatrical shorts by aging down the protagonists into a toddler kitten and a baby mouse. Despite this shift, the core dynamic remained: the pair continued to communicate without dialogue while attempting to outwit one another. To accommodate a younger audience, the production team toned down the violence typical of the classic cartoons. Concept art by Jerry Eisenberg initially suggested Tom might live with his parents, though the final version placed him with human owners.

Beyond the main segments, the show featured recurring supporting characters like the bulldog Spike and his son Tyke. Unlike the original shorts, Tyke was given the ability to talk, reflecting a shift toward emphasizing family values. Other segments included the persistent Droopy and his assistant Dripple, who frequently clashed with the villainous McWolf. The series also experimented with new formats, including a brief, two-episode revival of the Blast-Off Buzzard segment in season four, where the characters were given the power of speech.

The show enjoyed a multi-year run on Fox Kids before being canceled in 1994. It later found a long-term home in reruns on Cartoon Network starting in 1995, eventually moving to Boomerang in 2007. While the first season received a DVD release in 2013, the remaining three seasons have yet to be issued in that format. Despite its eventual conclusion, the series earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music Direction and Composition in 1992.
