When death vanishes, the world faces a terrifying new reality
In short: Imagine a world where death has suddenly ceased. What starts as a religious miracle quickly spirals into global chaos, straining medical resources and forcing governments to implement drastic, controversial measures. As the immortal population soars, the world faces systemic crises, including widespread financial depression and intense social instability.
In the fourth and final series of Torchwood, a spin-off from Doctor Who, the world is struck by a sudden phenomenon: death has ceased. This 'miracle' is first revealed during the failed execution of child killer Oswald Danes. While initially viewed through a religious lens, the inability to die creates immediate, systemic crises. Governments estimate that without intervention, the global population will become unsustainable within months, leading to widespread financial depression and social chaos. This unexpected phenomenon was first brought to light during the attempted execution of a notorious criminal. As the crisis intensifies, the world descends into a severe financial depression.
The crisis is not a natural phenomenon but a calculated move by a powerful group known as the Families. These descendants of three patriarchs have manipulated events in locations like Shanghai and Buenos Aires to achieve financial and political ends. They utilized a 'Blessing'—a crack running through the Earth that generates a morphic field—to rewrite the biological rules of humanity. They achieved this by injecting Jack Harkness's immortal blood into both sides of the Blessing simultaneously. The Families orchestrated this event to gain immense political and financial power. They achieved this by exploiting a cosmic crack known as the Blessing.
The series explores the dark side of immortality through the pharmaceutical company PhiCorp, which stockpiled drugs in anticipation of the event. As the plot unfolds, the team discovers that governments have begun using camps to incinerate those who would normally have died. Ultimately, the miracle is reversed by reintroducing Jack's mortal blood into the Blessing, a process that requires a sacrifice, as the character Esther Drummond dies in the process. The pharmaceutical firm PhiCorp had actually planned for this event by stockpiling medical supplies. To end the phenomenon, Jack Harkness's blood must be returned to the Blessing.
