A global conflict erupts as the Sea Devils return to Earth
In short: In a new Doctor Who spin-off, humanity faces an existential threat from the ocean. As the Sea Devils—now known as Homo Aqua—re-emerge, a low-level logistics manager is thrust into the role of humanity's ambassador to prevent a catastrophic war between land and sea.
Set within the Whoniverse, Russell T Davies' five-part science fiction drama is titled 'The War Between the Land and the Sea'. The series centers on the return of the Sea Devils, a species now referred to as Homo Aqua. The story concerns Barclay Pierre-Dupont, a junior UNIT logistics manager for transportation, who suddenly becomes the ambassador for mankind to manage aquatic species tensions. BBC One and Disney+ aired this five-part miniseries, produced by Russell T Davies. Pete McTighe contributed to the writing, handling three of the five episodes.
The production was filmed between August and December 2024 across various locations, including Wales, Cardiff, Spain, and Mallorca. The series features several returning characters from the Doctor Who franchise, including Jemma Redgrave as UNIT commander-in-chief Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Alexander Devrient as Colonel Christofer Ibrahim, and Ruth Madeley as scientific advisor Shirley Bingham. Notably, Colin McFarlane returns as General Austin Pierce, a figure first appearing in the Torchwood series. The cast includes Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in leading roles. Additionally, the production utilized the Pinewood Studios Underwater Stage in Buckinghamshire.
Critical reception has been varied. While the series has received positive reviews for its performances—particularly from Jemma Redgrave—and its visual effects, some critics found the pacing problematic. Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes show an 86% positive rating from 14 critics, though some individual critics, such as those from The Independent and The Guardian, offered more mixed assessments regarding the heavy presence of UNIT and the development of character relationships. The show premiered on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in December 2025. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an 86% approval rating from 14 reviews.
