A prophecy of four knocks signals the end of an era
In short: For the Tenth Doctor, survival was never a certainty. Haunted by a prophecy that he would die when someone knocks four times, he faces a scheme by his nemesis, the Master, to restore the Time Lords and destroy creation itself. It is a high-stakes race against destiny and cosmic annihilation.
Originally broadcast on BBC One on 25 December 2009 and 1 January 2010, "The End of Time" served as the final regular appearance for David Tennant's Tenth Doctor. Written and produced by Russell T Davies, the two-part special marked the conclusion of a series of specials and set the stage for Matt Smith's introduction as the Eleventh Doctor. This landmark event concluded the era of Russell T Davies's initial tenure as executive producer. It served as the final chapter for the series's 2008–2010 specials.
The plot revolves around a celestial conflict featuring the Master, aiming to revive the Time Lords following their extinction during the Time War. To achieve this, he uses a Gallifreyan diamond to pull the planet out of the Time War and into Earth's orbit. Lord President Rassilon complicates this plot by attempting to transition the Time Lords into an incorporeal form through the destruction of all creation. The Master seeks to transform humanity into billions of clones using a Vinvocci medical device. Meanwhile, the rogue Lord President Rassilon intends to destroy the rest of creation during his ascension.
The Doctor's fate is tied to a specific prophecy: "he will knock four times." This was foreshadowed by the character Carmen in "Planet of the Dead," who warned that the Doctor's song was ending. Ultimately, the Doctor's journey concludes when he takes the place of Wilfred Mott in a radiation-filled control room to save him, triggering a violent regeneration. The Doctor's survival is threatened by radiation poisoning after he saves Wilfred Mott. This event triggers a sudden and violent regeneration into the Eleventh Doctor.
The production was deeply personal for the creative team. While Davies described the story as both huge and intimate, both David Tennant and producer Julie Gardner noted the emotional weight of the script, with both expressing that they cried upon reading it. The production was a significant milestone for the BBC. Both the lead actor and the series producer found the script deeply moving.
