Can a mastery of makeup truly transform a life, or just a public image?
In short: Lim Ju-kyung, a high schooler bullied for her appearance, reinvents herself as a gorgeous goddess through the art of makeup. But when her bare face is eventually exposed, she must confront the insecurity that defined her past and learn that true beauty is rooted in confidence, not just aesthetic perfection.
Based on the webtoon by Yaongyi, the South Korean television series True Beauty explores the intersection of self-esteem and social perception. The protagonist, Lim Ju-kyung, suffers from severe bullying at her original school, leading her to a breaking point. After transferring to Saebom High School, she uses makeup skills learned from online tutorials to hide her perceived flaws. Her transformation is so effective that her peers label her a goddess, unaware of her natural appearance.
The narrative centers on a complex love triangle involving Lee Su-ho, a wealthy and cold student who shares Ju-kyung's love for horror comics, and Han Seo-jun, a former idol trainee. The tension is heightened by a shared, tragic past involving a mutual friend. While Su-ho initially fails to recognize Ju-kyung without her makeup, he eventually discovers her secret. Rather than rejecting her, he offers acceptance, helping her navigate the pressures of high school life and the eventual exposure of her bare face.
Beyond the central romance, the series examines the toxic expectations placed on youth. Characters like Su-jin face immense pressure from abusive, high-achieving parents, while others struggle with the fallout of financial ruin or the social hierarchies of school. For Ju-kyung, the journey concludes not with a reliance on cosmetics, but with a shift in perspective. By pursuing a career as a cosmetologist, she transforms her past trauma into a professional passion, ultimately proving that her worth is independent of others' judgments.
The production, which aired from December 2020 to February 2021, was recognized as the best Korean drama of 2021 by Forbes. The casting process was deliberate, with Yaongyi noting that she envisioned actor Cha Eun-woo as the character Lee Su-ho during the creation of the original webtoon. The series has since expanded its reach globally, becoming available on platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.
