How a remote Icelandic mystery series shattered national production records to reach global audiences
In short: Trapped transformed Icelandic television, moving from modest local budgets to a massive, internationally acclaimed production. Created by Baltasar Kormákur, this mystery drama redefined the scale of Nordic noir. By blending isolated landscapes with complex police procedural elements, it captured global attention, eventually finding a home on major international streaming platforms.
When Trapped first premiered on Icelandic television in December 2015, it marked a significant departure from the country's typical media landscape. With a production budget estimated at one billion Icelandic króna, or roughly 6.5 million euros, the series shattered previous industry norms. Before this project, local television productions rarely exceeded a budget of 200 million króna. This ambitious financial commitment, largely backed by RVK Studios with additional support from Creative Europe, allowed for a high-quality aesthetic that helped the show transcend its domestic origins.
The narrative centers on Andri Ólafsson, a police chief navigating the claustrophobic tension of a small town cut off by weather after a gruesome discovery. The series utilized various Icelandic locations, including the coastal towns of Siglufjörður and Seyðisfjörður, alongside the capital, Reykjavík, to ground its atmosphere. Filming for the initial ten-episode run spanned from late 2014 through May 2015, establishing a visual language that resonated with international broadcasters, including the BBC, which began airing the series in early 2016.
The show's success prompted a multi-year expansion, with a second series arriving in 2018 and a third, titled Entrapped, premiering in 2021. The evolution of the franchise saw significant shifts, including a move to Netflix for the third installment, which was re-edited from its original eight-episode format into six. Throughout its run, the series maintained a focus on the evolving role of its lead character, Andri, who transitioned from a local officer to a Reykjavík-based detective, reflecting the broader scope of the later mysteries while retaining the series' signature, stark Icelandic intensity.
