How Ukraine’s national broadcaster evolved from Soviet-era roots into a modern public media giant.
In short: Suspilne, Ukraine’s national public broadcaster, manages a vast network of television and radio channels reaching nearly every corner of the country. From its origins in early 20th-century radio to its current status as an independent media powerhouse, it serves as a critical archive and voice for Ukrainian society today.
The history of Ukrainian broadcasting is deeply intertwined with the nation's political evolution. Radio transmissions began in Kharkiv in 1924, followed by the launch of a nationwide network in 1928. Television followed decades later, with the establishment of the first nationwide channel, Ukraiinske Telebachennia, in 1965. For much of this period, these services operated under the Soviet framework, eventually transitioning through various state-run iterations after Ukraine declared independence in 1991.
A major shift occurred in 2014, when legislation was enacted to secure the broadcaster's independence from direct government control. This paved the way for the creation of the Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine, which officially registered on 19 January 2017. The organization consolidated the National Television Company of Ukraine and the National Radio Company of Ukraine, rebranding as Suspilne Ukraine in December 2019. Today, it operates as a public joint-stock agency, though 100% of its shares remain state-owned.
Suspilne’s reach is extensive, with its flagship channel, Pershyi, covering over 97% of Ukrainian territory. The network is remarkably diverse, encompassing national TV channels like Suspilne Kultura and Suspilne Sport, alongside a robust radio division and numerous regional outlets. Beyond live broadcasting, the company maintains the Suspilne Mediateka, a digital archive preserving audio and video records dating back to the 1920s. This infrastructure supports a wide range of programming, from news and analytics to specialized content for national minorities, ensuring the broadcaster remains a central pillar of the country's information landscape.
