Can a horror movie set entirely on a laptop screen actually terrify modern audiences?
In short: Unfriended, a 2014 supernatural horror film, unfolds through the lens of a single MacBook screen. By trapping six high school students in a haunted Skype call, the movie explores the inescapable nature of cyber-bullying and digital addiction, proving that modern terror is often just a few clicks away.
Directed by Levan Gabriadze and produced by Timur Bekmambetov, Unfriended centers on a group of friends whose online conversation is invaded by the spirit of a classmate who died by suicide after being bullied. The film, originally titled Cybernatural, was shot in just 16 days. To capture the frantic, authentic energy of digital interaction, the cast performed in separate rooms, with some sequences filmed in continuous, 80-minute long takes. This unconventional approach aimed to immerse viewers in the claustrophobic reality of a screen-based life.
The film’s narrative is driven by the characters' inability to simply log off, a point highlighted by critic Mark Kermode, who noted that the characters remain trapped because they are addicted to their digital existence. As the supernatural intruder forces them to play a lethal game of Never Have I Ever, their darkest secrets—ranging from infidelity to criminal acts—are exposed. This structure serves as a grim commentary on the permanence and reach of online actions, where bullying persists long after the school bell rings.
While critics were divided, with some finding the constant multi-tasking and clicking distracting, others praised the film for its innovative grasp of contemporary communication. Despite a modest $1 million budget, the film was a massive financial success, grossing $64.1 million worldwide. It subverted traditional found-footage tropes, replacing shaky cameras with the familiar, sterile interface of social media and messaging apps, ultimately forcing the audience to confront the unsettling reality of always-on social interaction.
