The surreal, secret history of the American toaster pastry
In short: What if the Pop-Tart wasn't just a breakfast staple, but the result of a clandestine corporate war? From NASA-recruited scientists to a ruthless dairy cabal and a strike by sentient mascots, the origin of this pastry is a fever dream of midcentury industrial espionage.
Set in 1963, the narrative follows Bob Cabana, the head of development at Kellogg's in Battle Creek, Michigan. After noticing children dumpster-diving at their rival, Post, Bob discovers they are developing a shelf-stable, fruit-based pastry with potentially addictive effects. To counter this, Kellogg's recruits Donna "Stan" Stankowski—a former NASA employee—to engineer a competing product. The project involves a bizarre array of "taste pilots" from various industries and a high-stakes deal with a Puerto Rican criminal named El Sucre to secure 99% of the world's sugar.
The production escalates into a geopolitical and industrial thriller. Marjorie Post, head of Post and former lover of Edsel Kellogg, attempts to secure Cuban sugar from Nikita Khrushchev, a move that alarms President John F. Kennedy. Meanwhile, Bob must navigate a ruthless dairy cabal that threatens him to protect their market share from a milk-free breakfast. The tension culminates in a violent strike by cereal mascots, led by the Shakespearean actor Thurl Ravenscroft (the voice of Tony the Tiger), who fears the new pastry will render mascots obsolete.
The film's climax hinges on a linguistic fluke: Walter Cronkite misreads the name "Trat-Pop" in reverse as "Pop-Tart" while reading from a piece of Silly Putty. This error forces a name change just before shipping, leading to a national sell-out in 60 seconds. While the film is a fictional comedy based on a joke by Jerry Seinfeld, it captures a specific "midcentury world-of-tomorrow" aesthetic. Critics remain divided, with some praising the surrealist vaudeville and production design, while others found the experience "empty," comparing it to a preservative-packed pastry.
