Why do factory rejects in a hidden universe dream of the Big World?
In short: In the 2019 animated film UglyDolls, deformed toys inhabit a secluded town called Uglyville, hidden within a factory. While their leader, Mayor Ox, insists the human world is a myth, a curious doll named Moxy leads a journey to find her purpose, challenging the superficial standards of the Institute of Perfection.
Directed by Kelly Asbury, the film centers on Moxy and her friends—Wage, Ugly Dog, Babo, and Lucky Bat—who discover that their existence is tied to a recycling center for factory rejects. Their journey brings them to the Institute of Perfection, a domain ruled by the vain prototype Lou. Lou maintains a rigid hierarchy where only 'Perfect Dolls' are permitted to pass through a portal to the human world, known as the Big World, after completing an obstacle course called the Gauntlet.
The narrative explores themes of self-worth and the definition of perfection. Lou, who harbors deep-seated jealousy, sabotages the UglyDolls' efforts, revealing that he is a prototype forbidden from leaving the factory. The conflict culminates when the UglyDolls and the Pretties realize that a doll's true purpose is not aesthetic perfection, but the ability to bring happiness to a child. By comforting a crying robotic baby during the Gauntlet, the UglyDolls prove their worth, leading to the creation of a new, inclusive portal.
The film, which grossed $32 million worldwide, features an ensemble cast including Kelly Clarkson, Janelle Monáe, and Blake Shelton. It was the final project directed by Asbury before his death in 2020. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the production stands as a notable musical venture for STX Films, featuring a soundtrack with contributions from artists like Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, and Pentatonix. The story concludes with the unification of the two towns into the City of Imperfection, where dolls are finally matched with children, including Moxy, who finds a home with a child named Maizy.
