In the vibrant Unikingdom, a cat-unicorn hybrid battles misery with relentless, explosive joy.
In short: Developed by Ed Skudder and Lynn Wang, Unikitty! follows the titular princess and her motley crew of friends. As they navigate the Unikingdom, they face off against the gloomy forces of Frown Town, proving that even a kingdom built on happiness must occasionally confront its own darker, angrier side.
At the heart of the Unikingdom is Princess Unikitty, a cat-unicorn hybrid voiced by Tara Strong. While she is defined by her upbeat, playful nature, the series explores the nuance of her character through her struggle to control a volatile, angry side. She is joined by a diverse group of companions: her younger brother Prince Puppycorn, the inventive Dr. Fox, the macho bodyguard Hawkodile, and the stoic royal advisor Richard, who is literally a grey 1x3 Lego brick.
The primary conflict pits the Unikingdom against Frown Town, led by the antagonist Master Frown. As a member of the villainous Doom Lords, Master Frown is dedicated to spreading misery to impress his peers. However, the series subverts traditional villain tropes, particularly regarding his relationship with his sidekick, Brock. While Brock often prefers playing video games to executing evil plots, the series finale confirms their romantic partnership and sees Master Frown defect from the Doom Lords to join Unikitty’s circle.
The world-building extends to a wide array of eccentric citizens and rivals. Hawkodile, for instance, must contend with his former best friend turned rival, Eagleator, while Dr. Fox’s scientific experiments frequently serve as both the catalyst and the solution for the gang's misadventures. By the series finale, the power of friendship ultimately triumphs over the collective threat of the Doom Lords, marking a definitive shift in the kingdom's landscape as former enemies find common ground.
