A cultist's warehouse serves as a nexus for four distinct nightmares
In short: In the anthology horror of V/H/S/94, disparate tales of sewer monsters, cyborg experiments, and vampire-hunting supremacists are not just random vignettes. They are interconnected threads woven into a singular, disturbing frame narrative where every piece of footage serves a darker purpose.
Released in 2021 as a Shudder Original Film, V/H/S/94 marks a structural shift for the franchise. While previous installments featured segments shot simultaneously by different crews, this film utilized a largely sequential production process. It serves as both a sequel to V/H/S: Viral (2014) and a prequel to the original trilogy, set specifically in 1994. The narrative is anchored by a frame story involving a SWAT team raiding a warehouse, discovering that the footage they are viewing is being curated by a cult.
The anthology explores four distinct sub-genres of horror. One segment follows a news team into sewers to find 'Raatma,' a creature associated with a ritualistic liquid. Another depicts a funeral home where a deceased man returns from his coffin during a tornado. A third focuses on the clinical horrors of a laboratory where scientist James Suhendra creates cyborgs like S.A., while a fourth follows a white supremacist group attempting to weaponize vampire blood. These stories are linked by the 'Holy Hell' frame narrative, which reveals that the cult members—Nash and Petro—are distributing these violent tapes as their primary medium.
The production was notable for its logistical constraints during the COVID-19 pandemic. To maintain the series' 'punk rock roots,' the team built sets in unconventional locations like hotels, conference rooms, and even underground sewers. While original writers David Bruckner and Simon Barrett initially planned different wraparound plots, the final script by Jennifer Reeder solidified the unified narrative where each short converges into a single, cohesive descent into madness.
