What if the Gilded Age never ended, but moved into space?
In short: Imagine a future where the great business trusts of 1901 were never broken up. Instead of a democratic expansion, humanity's reach into the stars became a hyper-corporate conquest. In this alternate timeline, your survival depends on navigating a galaxy governed by megacorporations and company towns.
The world of The Outer Worlds is built on a specific historical divergence: U.S. President William McKinley was never assassinated in 1901. This prevented Theodore Roosevelt from taking office, allowing the era's massive business trusts to remain intact and expand globally. By the time humanity developed faster-than-light travel, these corporate structures had transitioned into a hyper-corporate, class-centric society that sponsored space colonization as a means of profit rather than exploration.
Comprising an asteroid cluster and six planets, the Halcyon system falls under the rule of a ten-firm alliance known as the Halcyon Holdings Corporation. This 'company town' model extends to every corner of the frontier, blending Art Nouveau aesthetics with steampunk and dieselpunk influences. Players take on the role of 'the Stranger,' a passenger revived from the lost colony ship Hope after 70 years of cryosleep in 2355.
Mechanically, the game emphasizes player agency through branching narratives and reputation systems. You can interact with NPCs using combat, stealth, or dialogue options like persuasion and intimidation. Your choices—ranging from acting heroically to behaving 'moronically' based on your intelligence attribute—influence how factions perceive you. High reputation grants discounts, while low reputation can result in hostile NPCs attacking on sight. The narrative centers on a moral dilemma: assisting scientist Phineas Vernon Welles in reviving the lost colonists or betraying him to serve the Corporate Board.
