A fractured anthology of horror set in the final year of the millennium
In short: The fifth entry within the V/H/S series arrived in 2022. Moving away from the previous films' overarching narratives, this found footage anthology uses stop-motion toy soldier animations to bridge its five distinct segments, all set against the backdrop of 1999.
Set in 1999, the film is an anthology of five short horror segments. Unlike its predecessors, it lacks a continuous frame narrative, instead utilizing short stop-motion animations of toy soldiers, created by Brady from "The Gawkers," to serve as interludes between stories. These interludes were filmed using a camera belonging to an older brother named Dylan. The segments themselves were directed by a variety of creators, including Maggie Levin and Flying Lotus.
The film's production was driven by the success of its predecessor, V/H/S/94. Producer Josh Goldbloom had previously noted that a sequel would depend on the viewership performance of V/H/S/94 on the streaming service Shudder. Following that success, V/H/S/99 became Shudder's most-viewed premiere, breaking a record previously held by V/H/S/94. The film achieved significant commercial success, earning $682,078 through home sales. This performance helped ensure the franchise's continued expansion.
The anthology features diverse horror themes, including a punk rock band encountering possessed musicians in a former music venue, a college student's dangerous sorority hazing ritual involving a coffin, a twisted children's game show host, a group of teenagers encountering a gorgon, and a coven of witches attempting to summon a demon named Ukabon on New Year's Eve. One segment follows a quartet called R.A.C.K. who explore a burnt-out music venue. Another involves a student's terrifying ordeal involving a coffin and a vengeful spirit named Giltine.
Studio71 and Bloody Disgusting produced this movie, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on 16 September 2022. It was released on Shudder on October 20, 2022, and has since seen a sequel, V/H/S/85, released on October 6, 2023. The production was a collaboration between Studio71 and Bloody Disgusting. It arrived as a Shudder Original Film shortly after its festival debut.
