Recreating a classic cocktail from a 1906 recipe book
In short: Step back into the early twentieth century to master the Fernet Cocktail. This video demonstrates how to prepare a simple, historic drink originally documented by a prominent American restaurateur.
The recipe comes from 'Louis’ Mixed Drinks', a 1906 book by Louis Muckensturm. Muckensturm, an Alsatian immigrant who arrived in America in the 1890s, was a leading restaurateur known for his Boston establishment, Louis’ Café.
The cocktail is a straightforward preparation using Fernet-Branca, Curaçao, and Italian red or sweet vermouth. To make it, combine one liqueur-glass of Fernet-Branca, two dashes of Curaçao, and two liqueur-glasses of Italian vermouth over ice, then stir and strain.
