How a basketball legend and a NASCAR veteran built a racing powerhouse
In short: When Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin joined forces, they didn't just enter the NASCAR Cup Series; they shook the foundations of the sport. From high-stakes antitrust lawsuits to multi-million dollar charter acquisitions, 23XI Racing has become a dominant force in professional auto racing.
Founded in late 2020, 23XI Racing is a collaborative venture between Hall of Fame basketball player Michael Jordan and three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin. The team's name is a tribute to their respective legacies: Jordan's iconic number 23 and Hamlin's career-long number 11. Operating with a technical alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing, the organization fields several full-time entries, including the No. 23 Toyota Camry for Bubba Wallace and the No. 45 Camry for Tyler Reddick.
The team's ascent has been marked by both significant investment and intense legal friction. In 2021, 23XI made history by purchasing a charter from Germain Racing for $13.5 million, the most expensive purchase since the system's 2016 implementation. This financial momentum has been matched by competitive milestones, such as Bubba Wallace's first career win at the 2021 YellaWood 500 and Tyler Reddick's 2024 regular season championship victory.
However, the organization has also found itself at the center of major industry disputes. In October 2024, 23XI Racing joined Front Row Motorsports in filing an antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR, alleging anti-competitive practices by the France family regarding updated charter agreements. While a preliminary injunction initially allowed the teams to race as chartered entries in 2025, the legal battle continued through 2025, eventually reaching a settlement in December after eight days of court proceedings.
As the team expands, it continues to refine its infrastructure. In May 2024, the organization opened 'Airspeed,' its new race shop and headquarters in Huntersville, North Carolina. This growth reflects a shift from their early days of leasing equipment to operating with independent pit crews and a sophisticated technical framework.
