The child prodigy who traded classical purism for rock and roll
In short: Born in Aachen to a ballerina and a jurist, David Garrett rose from a child prodigy to a crossover sensation. By blending classical sonatas with rock songs and movie themes, he aims to spark interest in classical music among younger generations through high-energy performances.
David Garrett, born David Christian Bongartz on 4 September 1980, has spent his career navigating the boundaries of musical genres. His journey began early; after showing an interest in his brother's violin at age four, he was already studying at the Lübeck Conservatoire by age seven. His early career was marked by significant accolades, including being named the youngest soloist to sign an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon at age 13. Following his time at the Royal College of Music, he relocated to New York for studies at the Juilliard School. In 2003, he won the school's composition competition by performing a fugue in the style of Bach.
His technical mastery is evidenced by his association with legendary instruments. At age 11, he received his first Stradivarius from German president Richard von Weizsäcker. He has also performed with prestigious ensembles, such as the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in 1997 and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1999. His versatility is a hallmark of his 'crossover' style, which includes performing Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and various movie themes. He once suffered damage to a Guadagnini violin after falling during a 2008 performance. Additionally, he was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's fastest violinist.
Garrett's musical identity is a deliberate blend. While his roots are deeply classical—having studied under Itzhak Perlman at the Juilliard School—his repertoire often includes arrangements of rock and cinematic pieces. This approach is intended to make classical music more accessible to younger audiences. His discography reflects this duality, ranging from classical works to albums like 'Rock Revolution' and 'Explosive', which feature original compositions alongside diverse arrangements. His 2017 album, Rock Revolution, was preceded by the single Bittersweet Symphony. He also notably performed the UEFA Europa League Anthem in 2020.
