From classical violin to Guns N' Roses, the versatile career of Richard Fortus
In short: Before becoming the longest-tenured member of Guns N' Roses after Axl Rose and Dizzy Reed, Richard Fortus was a classically trained violinist. His journey from St. Louis youth symphonies to international rock stages reveals a musician whose technical precision has made him a permanent fixture in hard rock history.
Born in St. Louis in 1966, Richard Fortus began his musical education early, picking up the violin at age four and drums a year later. His formal training at the Conservatory of the Arts and Southern Illinois University, combined with his experience in local youth symphonies, provided a rigorous foundation. By 1984, he had founded his own band, The Eyes, which later evolved into Pale Divine after signing with Atlantic Records.
Fortus's career is defined by a restless creative energy. In 1992, he co-founded Love Spit Love with Richard Butler and Frank Ferrer. His path eventually crossed with Guns N' Roses in 2002, when a call from bassist Tommy Stinson led to an audition while Fortus was touring Europe with Enrique Iglesias. Since joining, he has become an essential part of the band's rhythm section, contributing to the 2008 album Chinese Democracy and participating in major tours, including the Not in This Lifetime... Tour.
Beyond his primary role in Guns N' Roses, Fortus maintains a diverse portfolio of collaborations. He has worked with artists ranging from Rihanna and N*SYNC to techno-rocker BT and the band X Japan. His resilience is as notable as his versatility; in 2015, he survived a severe motorcycle accident that resulted in multiple broken bones and internal injuries, yet he continued to pursue his craft. Today, he remains a highly sought-after professional, balancing his high-profile band commitments with various side projects and session work.
