The man behind the legend: how Jorge Messi shaped a footballing dynasty
In short: Before Lionel Messi became a global icon, his father was a chemical technician and youth coach in Rosario. From managing medical bills to navigating complex international tax laws, Jorge Messi was the architect of one of sports' most significant professional careers.
Born in 1958 in Rosario, Argentina, Jorge Horacio Messi’s life was defined by his devotion to his son's footballing ascent. Before entering the world of high-stakes sports agency, he worked in the metallurgical industry for the company Acidar and served as a chemical technician. His early passion for football saw him play as a midfielder for the youth system of Newell's Old Boys, though his playing career was interrupted by compulsory military service.
Jorge’s influence was foundational. He coached Lionel at the Abanderado Grandoli club in the Las Heras neighborhood when the boy was just four years old. As Lionel’s talent grew, the family faced significant hurdles, particularly regarding the financing of the medical treatment required for his development. This struggle eventually led the family to move to Spain in 2000, when Lionel was 13, following an offer from FC Barcelona's academy.
As Lionel’s career expanded through clubs like Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Miami, Jorge transitioned into a professional representative. Through Leo Messi Management, he oversaw the commercial interests and contracts of the superstar. This role was not without controversy; in 2013, both father and son faced Spanish legal proceedings regarding the taxation of image rights, resulting in a 2016 conviction and financial penalties for both.
Jorge Messi passed away on 8 August 2026, at the age of 68, following a prolonged illness in Rosario. His death occurred amidst the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a period that Lionel Messi later described as an immense emotional toll, causing him to doubt his future in professional football.
