From hookah supplies to a $5.45 billion convenience store empire
In short: What started as a niche delivery service for college students has transformed into a massive logistics powerhouse. Founded by two Drexel students, Gopuff has rapidly scaled its operations, navigating intense funding rounds, complex legal battles, and a massive shift in business model to dominate the on-demand convenience market.
In 2013, Yakir Gola and Rafael Ilishayev, who previously studied at Drexel University, launched Gopuff to provide snacks, beer, and hookah supplies to students. This niche service, operating under the name GoBrands, Inc., eventually expanded far beyond its original scope to include a vast array of goods typically found in convenience stores, such as household items and various snacks.
The company's growth was fueled by massive capital injections. In 2019, it secured $750 million from SoftBank, and by May 2024, the company reached a valuation of $4.45 billion. However, this rapid expansion has not been without friction. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Gopuff faced a significant decline, leading to multiple rounds of layoffs to pursue profitability. In July 2022, the company closed 76 U.S. warehouses and laid off approximately 1,500 employees. This was followed by further reductions in 2023 and 2024, including a 6% global staff reduction in 2024.
Beyond logistics, Gopuff has navigated significant legal and regulatory challenges. The company has faced accusations regarding the misclassification of delivery drivers as independent contractors rather than employees—a move that can prevent workers from receiving benefits like minimum wage or overtime. In March 2023, the Massachusetts attorney general fined the company $6.2 million for these labor law violations. Additionally, the company has dealt with controversies involving data privacy and the illegal sale of alcohol to minors, which has resulted in the revocation of delivery licenses in certain jurisdictions.
