How a Midwestern convenience store chain became a cult-like cultural icon
In short: Kwik Trip is not your average gas station. By vertically integrating its supply chain and sharing 40 percent of its profits with employees, this family-owned company has transformed from a small 1965 grocery store into a regional powerhouse with a devoted following that even includes wedding photos taken in-store.
Founded in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on June 16, 1965, by John and Donna Hansen, Kwik Trip began as a simple grocery store. It was not until 1970 that the company added gasoline to its offerings. Today, the chain is headquartered in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and operates 924 stores across seven states. While it operates as Kwik Star in Iowa, Illinois, North Dakota, and South Dakota to avoid confusion with the similarly named QuikTrip, the brand remains a singular entity under the ownership of the Zietlow family.
The company’s success is rooted in a strategy of vertical integration. Unlike most competitors, Kwik Trip maintains its own bakery, dairy, and distribution centers, allowing it to ship products to stores overnight. This control extends to its private labels, such as Kwikery Bake Shop and Nature's Touch, which account for 80 percent of total sales. By maintaining its own logistics subsidiary, Convenience Transportation, LLC, the company ensures that its shelves are stocked with everything from fresh produce to hot, ready-to-eat meals.
Beyond its operational efficiency, Kwik Trip has cultivated a unique corporate culture. The company shares 40 percent of its profits with its coworkers, resulting in an annual bonus of approximately 10 percent. This commitment to its workforce helped it earn the title of number one large workplace in Southeastern Wisconsin in 2011 and Convenience Store Chain of the Year in 2018. This focus on employee welfare and store cleanliness has fostered a sense of community, turning the chain into a cultural icon in the Upper Midwest.
The company continues to evolve under the leadership of CEO Scott Zietlow, who succeeded his father, Don Zietlow, in 2023. Recent expansions include new distribution centers and a push into Nebraska. Whether through its famous Glazers donuts, its loss-leader pricing on produce, or its 24/7 truck stops, Kwik Trip has redefined the convenience store experience by prioritizing local trust and consistent, high-quality service.
