The hidden math behind the global antibiotic crisis in livestock
In short: Global leaders have pledged to slash antimicrobial use in food systems by 2030. However, new projections suggest that without intervention, the sheer volume of antibiotics used in livestock could rise by nearly 30% by 2040, driven by growing populations and rising incomes.
The fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is often framed as a struggle against overuse, but the true challenge lies in how we measure that use. For years, researchers relied on the Population Correction Unit (PCU) method, which uses average slaughter weights to estimate livestock biomass. However, this approach is fundamentally imprecise. It fails to account for animal lifespans, individual weights, or the period animals are at risk of treatment. Recent studies suggest these methodological flaws can lead to an underestimation of antibiotic use intensity, particularly in regions like North America, where the discrepancy can reach 52%.
A more granular approach, known as the Livestock Biomass Conversion (LBC) method, provides a clearer picture. By integrating detailed data on species-specific weights, production cycles, and cohort levels, the LBC method revealed that global antibiotic use in 2019 was approximately 110,777 tons—significantly higher than the 99,414 tons previously estimated via the PCU method. This higher baseline is critical because the 'business as usual' scenario projects that usage could climb to roughly 143,481 tons by 2040.
The stakes extend far beyond the farm. The excessive application of antibiotics—whether for therapeutic, prophylactic, or growth-promoting purposes—creates selective pressure that fosters multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. Pathogens such as E. coli and Salmonella can reach humans through contaminated food or environmental pathways, like antibiotic residues in manure used as fertilizer. While the EU banned growth-promoting antibiotics in 2006 and the US followed with similar restrictions in 2017, the global trajectory remains a complex puzzle of rising biomass and shifting regulatory landscapes.
