The long-term investment of a single asparagus bed

Asparagus - no dig, planted in mulch over weeds, how to grow and harvest · 6:37 · Video: Charles Dowding · Watch at the source

In short: Growing asparagus requires immense patience, as you must wait years before your first harvest. However, once established, these perennial plants can provide reliable, delicious spears every spring for up to two decades, making them a highly rewarding addition to any permanent garden bed.

Asparagus is a long-term horticultural commitment. While you can grow the plant from seed, this method requires more intensive care and a three-year waiting period before the first harvest. A more efficient route is planting 'crowns'—dormant, one-year-old roots. These settle more successfully and allow for harvesting to begin after just two years. Once your plants are established, an individual plant should produce roughly 10 spears per season, with the harvest window lasting about eight weeks during spring and early summer.

When selecting varieties, the sex of the plant matters. Many modern F1 hybrids are all-male, which is preferred because male plants produce more and better spears. Older, non-hybrid varieties often produce both male and female plants; however, female plants can produce seedlings that compete with your main crop, necessitating extra weeding. For the best results, look for varieties with the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), such as 'Backlim', which is an all-male variety known for mid-to-late season crops.

Maintenance can be simplified through no-dig methods. In a 2018 observation of a sixth-year crop, gardener Charles Downging demonstrated that planting in mulch over weeds on level ground—rather than using ridges—can make weeding much easier because very few weeds grow. After the harvest period ends, it is vital to leave the shoots to grow into tall, ferny stems throughout the summer. In autumn, simply cut these stems down to the ground to prepare the plants to re-sprout the following spring.
