How to prepare your garden containers for the harsh winter months

In short: Standard planters often fail when temperatures drop, but professional landscaping techniques can extend their lifespan. By using specific insulation and drainage strategies, you can protect your greenery from freezing, ensuring your front entry remains vibrant even when the frost arrives.

To create a planter capable of surviving winter, landscape designer Jenn Nawada suggests a multi-layered approach focused on insulation and drainage. The process begins by measuring the interior of the planter and cutting rigid foam insulation to fit the outside edges. Crucially, this foam should line the sides but must not cover the bottom of the container. Using a straight edge during the cutting process will ensure the foam pieces are shaped perfectly. This method helps create a precise fit against the interior walls.

Effective drainage is essential to prevent root rot and freezing damage. To maintain water flow without clogging the necessary drainage holes, Nawada recommends placing shards of old terracotta pots over the holes. This layer should be followed by landscape fabric to keep the soil and debris separate. Before adding the bulk of your potting soil, a few handfuls should be placed inside to secure the shards and fabric in position.

The selection of plants and their maintenance are equally vital for winter survival. For this specific setup, Nawada used boxwoods in the center, underplanted with ivy. To prevent the plants from becoming pot-bound, it is important to tease the roots before planting. Additionally, applying an anti-desiccant spray to the leaves of both the boxwood and the ivy before the first frost helps preserve moisture throughout the winter. While the specific plants and soil can be sourced from home centers, the success of the installation depends on these precise layering and protection steps. The specific combination of boxwood and ivy used in this example is easily accessible at local garden centres. You can also find suitable potting soil at these same retail locations.
