Most seed trays are built for disposability, but a specialized design from Charles Dowding prioritizes longevity. By rethinking the shape of the cell, it is possible to accelerate seedling growth, prevent waterlogging, and significantly decrease the amount of potting mix required for your greenhouse.
For many gardeners, the transition from seed to transplant is a moment of high risk. Traditional module trays often present two major hurdles: the potential for root damage during extraction and the inefficient use of growing media. Seeking a more durable solution, Charles Dowund designed a new series of trays six years ago, specifically to address the lack of long-lasting equipment in the market. Produced by Containerwise, these trays are engineered to allow the rootball to slide upward easily, ensuring that the delicate root systems of tiny seedlings remain intact during the moving process.
The mechanics of the tray rely on a tapered cell structure. This specific geometry serves a dual purpose: it facilitates superior drainage to prevent the waterlogging that can stifle young plants, and it allows for a reduced volume of compost to be used per cell. Because the cells are tapered, they hold only a small, controlled amount of potting mix, making the sowing process more resource-efficient. This design is particularly effective for starting crops like Sweet Peas, where consistent moisture and aeration are critical for early development.
The system is built for scalability and reuse, currently available in three distinct configurations: 15, 30, and 60 cells. This versatility allows gardeners to manage different seed sizes and quantities within a single system. As of December 2025, the trays have been a staple in Dowding's greenhouse operations, proving that a focus on structural durability and efficient drainage can create a more sustainable and productive starting environment for much of the world's seed-sowing enthusiasts.
