How to turn a single succulent into a thriving garden
In short: Succulents are celebrated for their striking appearance and incredible toughness. Because they are so easy to propagate, a single plant can quickly expand into a lush landscape. Whether you are thinning out a crowded patch or starting from scratch, simple trimming techniques can yield an endless supply of new greenery.
Propagating succulents is a practical way to expand a collection using existing plant material. For rosette-forming varieties like Aloe ‘Gemini’, which features orange-yellow flowers, the process involves identifying 'pups' or baby plants growing around the base. Once these are cut away with a serrated knife, you should remove any old leaves from the base before planting them directly into a pot with well-draining mix or into a garden bed.
For more rambling species like Pigs ears (Cotyledon orbiculata ‘Silver Waves’), which features elegant grey-white leaves, you can strip the bottom leaves from a stem piece and pot it directly into a sharply draining mix. This trimming also serves a dual purpose: it prevents the plant from becoming leggy and encourages fresh, vigorous growth.
However, propagation requires an awareness of environmental impact. Some popular succulents can become problematic if they escape a garden. To illustrate, the hardy Snake plant (Sansevieria ‘Yellow Stripe’) is classified as a weed throughout sub-tropical Queensland and NSW. Similarly, Pigs ears is considered a declared weed in certain parts of Australia. To prevent these plants from becoming environmental weeds, never dump unwanted plant material in the bush or other outdoor areas. Instead, always compost it or use a municipal green waste system. When planting vigorous species like the Snake plant, ensure you plant the pieces deeply enough to provide stability for their tall, heavy growth.
