Why winter is the ideal season for your orchard's structural renovation
In short: When sap flow slows to a snail's pace, your trees are ready for a winter trim. Proper pruning now ensures stronger branches and higher quality fruit in the spring, but the wrong timing or the wrong tools can invite disease or even kill your young trees.
Winter pruning is most effective when sap movement is minimal. For varieties like apples, pears, and quince, this is the optimal window to manage growth. The process should begin by removing suckers from the roots, followed by any dead, diseased, or damaged limbs. Once the structural integrity is addressed, focus on clearing inward-growing stems to prevent congestion in the tree's central section and reducing overall height to facilitate easier maintenance and harvesting.
However, not all trees follow this schedule. Stonefruit, particularly apricots, should be avoided during winter cuts. In cold weather, these trees tend to bleed when cut, increasing their susceptibility to infection. Instead, wait until late summer or early autumn, once the fruit has been harvested. For young trees, the process is more delicate: select 3 to 4 strong branches to establish the final shape, cut back the central stem, and trim branches to outward-facing buds to encourage lateral growth.
Precision is vital to prevent injury to the plant. When using secateurs, always ensure the cutting edge faces the side of the branch being left; using the blunt hook side can bruise living tissue. Cuts should be made as close as possible to the branch's collar to prevent infection-prone stubs. Furthermore, tools must be maintained with a sharpener for clean cuts and disinfected with methylated spirits between different trees to prevent the spread of fungi or disease. For safety, always wear clear glasses to protect against flying sawdust and twigs.
