Why winter is the secret season for establishing a productive orchard
In short: Planting trees in the dead of winter might seem counterintuitive, but it is the optimal window for bare-rooted stock. By leveraging dormancy, you can establish a permanent fruit and nut grove with precision techniques that prioritize root health over immediate growth.
Bare-rooted trees are harvested from paddocks while dormant in early winter, typically between June and August. Because these trees have been removed from their original soil, they undergo significant stress. To mitigate this, gardeners must prepare them by removing nursery sawdust and soaking the roots in a bucket of water mixed with a weak seaweed solution. This keeps the root system hydrated during the critical transition from storage to the ground.
The geometry of the planting hole is vital for success. One should excavate an opening measuring double the width of the roots while maintaining their original depth. For heavy soils, adding gypsum can act as a clay-breaker to improve drainage and aeration. When placing the tree, it is essential to maintain the original soil level; planting too deep can suffocate the root system. Specifically, for grafted trees, the graft must remain at least 10cm above the ground to prevent rot.
A common mistake is over-fertilizing immediately after planting. Instead, gardeners should wait until spring to provide nutrients. Because bare-rooted trees lose a significant portion of their root mass during transport, they require heavy pruning right after being put in the ground. This involves cutting back the central leader and main branches—often 3 to 4 primary limbs—to an outward-facing bud. This 'vase shape' compensates for lost roots while directing energy into strong, productive growth.
In dry climates, a 'moat' can be constructed around the edge of the planting hole to funnel water toward the root zone. Finally, protecting the new trunk from pests and keeping the base clear of mulch prevents collar rot, ensuring the tree survives its first season in its new home.
